# Declaring your work

A declaration is a signed statement that connects a content fingerprint (ISO 24138) to the information you provide about the work – who made it, what rights apply, how AI was involved and how it may be used. Liccium publishes declarations to public registries, where people, platforms and automated systems can look them up by regenerating the fingerprint from a file they have found.

## What happens when you declare

1. Liccium shows you every field that will be included, so you can check it before signing.
2. Liccium packages the file's ISCC with the information from the active plugins.
3. The package is signed with the key held in your Liccium installation.
4. A trusted timestamp (RFC 3161) is added by a public Time Stamping Authority, recording when the declaration was made.
5. Liccium publishes the declaration to the public registries and keeps a copy of the signed declaration on your computer.

Liccium always asks before publishing. Your file itself is not uploaded – only the fingerprint and the information you attached.

## Declaring a web page and its images

When you add a web page by URL, you can declare the article and its embedded images together in one step. Each receives its own declaration, and you can deselect images you do not want to declare.

## Updating a declaration

If you change information on a file and declare again, the new declaration supersedes the previous one. The earlier declaration stays on record, so anyone can follow the history, but the latest declaration is the one that applies. The History tab of each file shows all its declarations.

## Withdrawing a declaration

You can withdraw a published declaration from the public registries. The registries then mark it as withdrawn. The signed declaration and its timestamp remain valid as a record of what was stated and when – a withdrawal changes its status, not its history.
